Coming to a Translated Test? Here’s How to Prepare for the Hygiene Passport Test in Your Own Language

The hygiene passport is an important qualification for many people working in food service, restaurants, and catering. If your Finnish, Swedish, or English skills are not yet strong enough to take the standard test, you can complete a translated hygiene passport test in your own language. But what exactly is a translated test, how can you prepare for it, and what should you know before test day?

What Is a Translated Test?

A translated test is a hygiene passport test where the questions are available in your own language – for example, Arabic, Russian, Chinese, Thai, Turkish, or Spanish.
During the test, you’ll receive two papers:

  • The official test form (in Finnish, Swedish, or English) – you will mark your answers on this paper.
  • A translation sheet, where each question is translated into your chosen language. Each statement is numbered to make matching easy.
The translated test is intended for people who do not yet have sufficient Finnish, Swedish, or English skills to complete the regular hygiene passport test.

Note: There is no time limit for the translated test – you can take as much time as you need.

The Use of Interpreters in the Hygiene Passport Test

Normally, interpreters or any kind of aids are not allowed in hygiene passport tests. In translated tests, written translations are used instead of interpreters. In some special cases, the test can be arranged with an interpreter, but this requires a separate agreement and strong justification. In such cases:

  • The hygiene passport examiner orders a written translation of the test and arranges an independent interpreter who has no connection to the test participants.
  • Participants cannot bring their own interpreter.
  • The interpreter reads the statements aloud but is not allowed to assist or explain.
  • The participation fee covers the test arrangements, translation, and interpreter’s work.

What Happens on the Test Day?

At the beginning of a translated hygiene passport test, you’ll receive instructions spoken in Finnish or English and written in your own language. The examiner will supervise the session and check your ID from an official document.

After the test, your papers are checked. If you pass, your official hygiene passport (card and certificate) will be mailed to your home within a few weeks.

Where Are Translated Tests Available?

We organize translated hygiene passport tests regularly in Helsinki, for example in Russian, Arabic, Chinese, and Thai.

Tests in other languages or locations are arranged based on demand. A test can be organized when there are at least six participants.

Please note that organizing a translated test takes at least one month, so it’s not possible to arrange one at very short notice.

If you already have a group that wants to take the test in their own language, contact us by email: info@hygieniapassi.fi

How to Prepare for the Test

The hygiene passport test includes only the test itself, so it’s important to study beforehand. Fortunately, there are several ways to prepare:
