Hygiene Passport Test – the complete guide

The hygiene passport test comprises 40 statements. To obtain the hygiene passport, a minimum of 34 points is required from the test. It is conducted independently and in writing in a test room under the supervision of a hygiene passport test instructor. The test cannot be completed electronically or remotely. During a standard test session (Finnish, English, Swedish), participants have 45 minutes to respond to the statements and may leave no earlier than 20 minutes after the test begins.

BEFORE THE HYGIENE PASSPORT TEST

Before the hygiene passport test, it is important to arrive at the test premises on time, no later than 15 minutes before the test begins. Being late may prevent entry to the test, unless it occurs within the first 20 minutes after the test starts. You must also bring an original, photo ID that is valid and official, which will be checked when you submit your test form.

AFTER THE HYGIENE PASSPORT TEST

I passed the test – when will I receive my hygiene passport?

The Finnish Food Authority will issue you a hygiene passport certificate and card, which will be mailed to you approximately 4–6 weeks after the hygiene passport test. If you need your hygiene passport urgently, you can always request a temporary certificate from the test instructor. The temporary certificate is valid until the official certificate arrives.

I didn't succeed – now what?

No worries, many people have to retake the hygiene passport test. The retake fee is always cheaper than the first time! Study the topics that were challenging for you and practice for the test. Book a new appointment when you feel more confident about the subject area!

Do I need to bring my own pen to the test?

You do not need to bring your own pen to the hygiene passport tests; pens are provided for everyone. The Finnish Food Authority specifies that pens used for background and answer markings must be of a color other than black or similar tool that ensures the permanence and archivability of test results. The use of pencils is not allowed.

What else is asked in the test?

You must clearly fill in your own name and date of birth on the test form. These details will also appear on the certificate and hygiene passport issued.

Can I use notes during the test?

No additional sources or aids, such as notes or study materials, may be used during the test. Speaking, additional explanations, or questions during the test are prohibited. All questions must be asked before the test begins. Failure to follow instructions may result in the test being invalidated and the examinee being removed from the test room.

What if I want to change my answer?

You can change your answer during the test if you feel you have answered incorrectly. You should neatly shade in the box where you provided the incorrect answer and place a new cross in the correct box. Please note that unclear markings or failure to answer will be interpreted as incorrect answers.

What if I don't understand a question?

You can ask the test instructor about topics or test requirements before or after the test. The instructor may not guide or comment on the test statements during the test itself. The test must be completed independently. Test participants are not allowed to discuss the test questions among themselves. The instructor will provide all relevant instructions before the test begins. Therefore, it is important to arrive at the test location on time!

Can I see afterwards which questions I answered correctly and incorrectly?

Test statements and test forms prepared by the Finnish Food Authority may not be used for any other purpose or provided to other individuals at any time. The test instructor may only provide Finnish Food Authority test forms to individuals participating in the hygiene passport test during the test. The instructor may not return test forms to participants after the test.All test questions are property of the Finnish Food Authority. Copying, storing (including electronically), distributing, and sharing test material is prohibited. However, you can review your hygiene passport test answers personally with the test instructor immediately after the hygiene passport test or in a separately arranged meeting with the test instructor.
