Clean surfaces are a crucial part of food hygiene, especially in professional kitchens. Regularly removing lime scale from machines and tiled walls is essential, as lime stains can attract dirt and microbes, compromising hygiene.

Citric acid for lime scale removal: an easy and effective solution

In home kitchens, citric acid is a handy tool for cleaning lime deposits from appliances and tiles. Available from pharmacies, citric acid powder can be used in dishwashers, washing machines, coffee makers, and kettles. Always ensure that surfaces in contact with food are thoroughly cleaned after treatment.

How to clean your coffee maker with citric acid:

  1. Dissolve 25 g (about 2 tablespoons) of citric acid in 0.5 liters of cold water.
  2. Pour the solution into the water tank of the coffee maker and let about half of it run through.
  3. Turn off the machine and let the solution sit for about 30 minutes.
  4. Turn the coffee maker back on and let the remaining water run through.
  5. Finally, rinse thoroughly by running cold water through the machine 2-3 times.

Lime scale removal in professional kitchens: the power of acidity

In professional kitchens, lime scale removal products often contain acidic ingredients like citric acid. It's important to use cleaning products specifically designed for food establishments and follow the dosage instructions on the packaging. Since professional-grade concentrates can be strong, be sure to carefully review the product's usage instructions and the legally required safety data sheet.

Lime scale removal requires the right chemistry, and acidic solutions do the job. Alkaline general-purpose cleaners, for example, won't effectively remove lime deposits.

Did you know? Citric acid can also be used to keep water containers hygienic when used in the correct amounts. You can find guidelines from the City of Helsinki for mobile food vendors here. (PDF in Finnish)
